World's first 200 Mil. BHP Production Milestone Achievement of 2-stroke Engine

news-details

Hyundai Heavy Industries-Engine & Machinery Division(HHI-EMD) held a ceremony to achieve 200 million BHP in 2-Stroke engine production at its engine assembly plant in Ulsan on the 22nd (Wednesday) and built a gold tower of 200mil. 66,277 horsepower accumulation by starting a 74,720 horsepower 2-Stroke engine (model name: 8G95ME-LGIM).

The engine that has achieved 200 million BHP is a "Methanol Dual-Fuel" engine which are attracting attention as one of next-generation eco-friendly fuels. It is the world's first large bore methanol engine and will be mounted on Maersk’s 16,000 TEU container ship which is also the world's first methanol propulsion container ship.

More than 300 people attended the ceremony, including Sam Ka, Vice Chairman & CEO of KSOE, Han Young-seuk Vice Chairman & CEO, Lee Sang-kyun President & CEO of Hyundai Heavy Industries and delegates from the shipbuilding and shipping industries.

The accumulated 200 million BHP in 2-Stroke engine production is 44 years after Hyundai Heavy Industries produced its first 2-stroke engine in 1979, an unprecedented record that no engine maker in the world has achieved. Hyundai Heavy Industries founded the engine business in 1976 based on the judgment that it is essential to build its own engine, the heart of the ship, in order to be competitive in the shipbuilding business. HHI-EMD successfully built the 9,380 horsepower engine as the 1st engine production in 1979. it achieved 50 million horsepower production in 2005 for the first time in the world, beating engine makers in Europe and Japan, which have more experience than HHI-EMD. Following 10 million BHP in 1992, In September 2010, just five years later, it also reached 100 million BHP production for the first time in the world, and again achieved 200 million BHP for the first time in 11 years and 6 months, solidifying its status as the world's top 2-Stroke engine maker.

HHI-EMD's global market share of 2-stroke engines (as of 2022) is 36%, maintaining its global No. 1 for 34 years since 1989. Han Ju Seok, SEVP & COO of HHI-EMD, said “HHI-EMD has played a pivotal role in Korea's rise as the world's best shipbuilding power through high quality for the past 40 years and will continue to strengthen its technology to lead the shipbuilding industry to make a leap forward”
